Join us for a one-of-a-kind master class with Broadway tap sensation Khalid Hill. Part interview, part tap dance history lesson, and mainly a huge jam session, Khalid walks us through his journey as an elite dance performer in the Broadway musical Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk. Joining in will be guest rapper Inphynit DaGhost, Charlotte pianist Noel Freidline, and a few other area musicians and performers. This is a great opportunity to hear and meet up close a genuine but humble Broadway talent. Tickets are $10 for general admission — but if you are 18 years of age and younger, it’s free!!!

Khalid Hill

Khalid Hill is a professional artist from Boston and currently residing in Harlem, NYC. He has been training in tap dance for 29 years, and holds a Masters Degree in Performing Arts Administration from New York University. As a professional, Khalid has performed as a featured artist at colleges and theaters in 40 cities nationwide and abroad in the US, Canada, and Germany. As a dance instructor and educator, he has taught master classes and lectured at Gordon College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Bridgewater State University, and Lehman College. His credits include: Bounce (in Disney World) with Mogee & Friends; on Broadway and in the first national tour of Bring in Da’ Noise, Bring in Da’ Funk, under the direction of George C Wolfe; The Jerry Lewis Telethon 2006 in Las Vegas; Invitations To A Dancer with Savion Glover; and Cholesterol Low Down (national tour), with Debbie Allen and Dick Clark. Khalid has performed as a featured soloist for Hillary Clinton, Bill Irwin, and Maya Angelou. Khalid has also provided choreography and artistic direction for numerous productions, including The Urban Nutcracker in Boston (9 seasons), The Prison Break Conference in Rhode Island, Chosen in North Carolina (in collaboration with A Chosen Few Inc.), The Medicine Showdown in Atlanta and St Louis, and his one-man show Not Too Cutty directed by Adam Koplan for the Flying Carpet Theater Company. Khalid is known for his intricate “rapid-fire” footwork that has impressed audiences across the US.

Noel Freidline

Noel Freidline (Composer/Arranger/Music Director) A pianist, vocalist, writer and arranger, Noel has led his own group, the Noel Freidline Quintet, for over 26 years.  Freidline has recorded 8 CDs, performed at jazz festivals as diverse as the Jacksonville (FL) Jazz Festival to the Bethlehem (PA) Musikfest to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He held down a three-year house position at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and performed for actress Julia Roberts’ surprise 35th birthday party.  In February of 2018, Noel released his eighth album, “Old Devil Moon,” a collaboration with vocalist Maria Howell.  In addition to his work with the NFQ, Noel performs regularly with the Charlotte Symphony, both as a featured artist and ensemble member.  Noel also performs regularly with touring Broadway shows. Noel was named Best Jazz Musician by Charlotte Magazine in 2006 and in 2009 and was named “Best Musical Director” by the Metrolina Theatre Association of the Carolinas.  In May, 2015 Freidline was inducted into the Jacksonville Jazz Hall of Fame.  As a composer and arranger, Noel has written and recorded music for ESPN, ABC and the Walt Disney Company, with his most recent work being featured on Monday Night Football, the NBA All-Star Game, and SportCenter.    He is a 1991 graduate of the University of North Florida, BA in Music (magna cum laude).  A native of Clearwater, KS, Noel has resided in Charlotte, NC with his family since 2003.

Inphynit DaGhost

Inphynit, (Pronounced “Infinite”) DaGhost, also known as hip hop poet Marlon Carey, was a member of the 2010 Boston Lizard Lounge Poetry Slam Team, ranked 11th in the Nation, as well as the 2013 Providence RI Poetry Slam team. He is a proud member of Providence-based poetry ensemble, Brother’s Keeper, a group dedicated to inspiring and educating young people in urban environments to aspire to greatness.  Named “Best Hip Hop Poet” by the Cambridge Poetry Awards two years in a row, he has also been the Boston Cantab Lounge’s “Grand Slam Champion” and Lizard Lounge King.  Marlon has been a TEDxBoston speaker and a presenter at a Providence presentation of Pechakucha. Carey is a member of RIBS (Rhode Island Black Storytellers), and is the co-founder of Shakespeare to Hiphop.  With a blend of eclectic themes, wordplay and wit, Marlon brings a refreshing twist on performance poetry his charming flow, poignant, clever lyrics and serious fondness for language are blended artfully to create a unique presentation. He is a husband, a father of three, and Teaching Artist in schools all across the country. Make some noise for Marlon Carey aka Inphynit!
