Roots and Grease Cause a Sanitary Sewer Spill

The City of Monroe Water Resources Department responded to a sanitary sewer spill on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

The ongoing spill is coming from a gravity sewer main break located within the vicinity of 1208 Rosa Drive. The spill was caused by roots and grease. 

The ongoing discharge is running into Lake Lee.

There is no risk to the City water supply as the Water Treatment Plant is only utilizing Lake Twitty as our source water.

Lake Lee has not been utilized recently. Crews are working to repair the line and will provide an update once repairs are complete.

The following spill was reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality on March 2, 2024.

  • Volume: Ongoing and To Be Determined
  • Tributary: Richardson Creek Tributary

State regulations require that any spill of untreated wastewater greater than 1,000 gallons be reported to the NC Department of Environmental Quality within 24 hours, and that information be broadcast to all electronic and print media covering the county where the spill occurred.

Residents are asked to report any suspected sanitary sewer overflow or problem to the City’s Water Resources Department at (704) 282-4601.
