The City of Monroe is reporting a discharge of untreated wastewater from its sanitary sewer collection system resulting from damage to a sewer force main located near 637 Euclid Street.
The discharge occurred on December 16, 2025, when a sewer force main was punctured during nearby construction activity. The spill lasted approximately 4 hours and resulted in an estimated 30,000 gallons of untreated wastewater being released.

The untreated wastewater entered the Flat Creek Branch of Stewart Creek, a tributary within the Rocky River Watershed.
City crews responded immediately on Tuesday to isolate the damaged line, stop the discharge, and initiate cleanup efforts. The spill was also reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality within hours of City awareness.
Repairs to the force main were completed, and additional monitoring and cleanup actions were conducted to prevent further discharge.
At this time, no impacts to drinking water sources have been identified. The City continues to assess the affected area and coordinate with appropriate agencies as needed.
North Carolina General Statutes Article 21, Chapter 143.215.1C requires that any spill of untreated wastewater greater than 1,000 gallons be reported to the NC Department of Environmental Quality, and that information be broadcast to all electronic and print media covering the county where the spill occurred as well as the county immediately downstream.
