Monroe Fire Department's 2026 Vision is to continue to fulfill our personal and organizational commitment to protect life and property in the City of Monroe, while living our core values in all that we do. This vision will only become reality by dedicating ourselves to service, embracing history, living for our future, and pursuing excellence in all that we do.

    Ron Fowler

    Fire Chief

Ron Fowler is Chief of the Monroe Fire Department. In this role, Chief Fowler leads the Fire Department in providing fire protection services for the City of Monroe. Chief Fowler holds various fire service-related certifications, including the Chief Fire Officer Designation with the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He has an associate’s degree in Fire Protection Technology and a bachelor’s degree in Fire Safety Engineering Technology. Chief Fowler is also a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.

Chief Fowler, a native of Monroe, joined the Monroe Public Safety Department in 1983. He provided fire, police, and medical services while rising through the ranks of the public safety department from 1983 until 1999. He was appointed Chief of the newly reorganized Monroe Fire Department in 1999 when the City dissolved the public safety concept and formed separate fire and police departments. Chief Fowler’s varied background in public safety provides a good foundation for his role as Fire Chief. In this role, Chief Fowler is responsible for leading the Fire Department in providing the following services to the citizens of Monroe: fire suppression, emergency medical first response, rescue, hazardous materials response, emergency management, fire prevention, public education, and fire code administration.  

Chief Fowler is involved in various fire service organizations. He is a past president of both the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs and the Southeastern Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. 

Ron and his wife attend Lakeview Baptist Church. He is a Rotarian and a member of the Monroe Rotary Club. Ron also serves on the board of directors for Safe Kids/Safe Communities of Union County.
