Fire Prevention & Life Safety Programs

Our mission in the Monroe Fire Department includes protecting the quality of life and property in our community through fire prevention and life safety education.

Education requests should be made in advance and can be completed by contacting our Fire and Life Safety Educator, Captain/Assistant Fire Marshal Katie Hinson.

Station Tours

Fire Station tours are available for all age groups. These tours provide an age-appropriate educational experience by teaching fire and life safety along with how the fire department operates. We normally offer station tours at Stations 1 and 4, but all stations can be toured. We can also set up virtual tours.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Fire extinguisher training is available for high school students and adults. The training can be scheduled for businesses, civic/church groups, and school courses. The first portion of training includes a lecture-style teaching session with a PowerPoint presentation. The second portion of training is done in an outdoor space using the Bullex Live-Fire Extinguisher Trainer.

Educational Presentations/Displays

Educational presentations/displays can be given at your facility on a variety of topics, including hands-on CPR training, and career fairs. These are available to groups such as older adults, daycare children, students, parents, scout groups, and others.

Truck Displays

A fire truck can be requested for educational events where groups will be able to look inside the truck and compartments while learning the operations of the truck. This allows us a great opportunity for community interaction and fire-prevention education. Please keep in mind that the fire truck may still be responding to emergency calls.

Steps to Safety (Ages 55+)

This is a group presentation of the program that has been created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is a fire and fall prevention program for older adults. It includes eight fire and eight fall messages aimed at educating and promoting behavior change to reduce the incidence of injuries from fires and falls.

Fire Safety & Extinguisher for Childcare Centers

These classes cover fire code compliance within the childcare setting, along with fire extinguisher training for staff. These classes can give one contact credit hour of training credit through the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education.

Citizens Academy

The Monroe Fire Department participates in the Citizens Academy hosted by the City of Monroe Human Resources Department. This eight-week program looks at the roles and functions of city departments, such as fire, police, finance, energy services, and many more. It is open to residents of Monroe and those who work in the City of Monroe.
