Our Mission
Our mission is to provide consistent, timely, and courteous service to all our customers. The focus of our service is to protect the public's health, safety, and welfare by ensuring all buildings and structures within the City's jurisdiction meet the minimum requirements of the NC Building Codes and, at the same time, to encourage our customers to locate, alter, or renovate their enterprise here in Monroe.
Our Services
We provide free consultation services to anyone seeking to locate their business in Monroe. Our purpose is to visit the proposed site, to evaluate and discuss any code compliance issues, and to assist you in making a decision before you lease or make a purchase.
We strive to provide expert professional answers to your code questions based on over 40 years of inspection experience.

Latest Code Updates
2018 Building Code
The 2018 Building Code became mandatory beginning January 1, 2019.
The City of Monroe uses the following codes:
2018 North Carolina State Building Codes i.e. Building, Residential, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fuel Gas, Fire, Existing Building, Energy Conservation and Administrative Codes. The 2017 NC Electrical Code is used for one- and two-family homes and townhouses, and the 2020 NC Electrical Code is used for commercial.
2017 State Electrical Code
The Rules Review Commission of the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings approved the 2017 State Electrical Code on February 15, 2018, as having an effective date of June 12, 2018.

If you would like an inspection department informal internal review of your inspection results, please fill out the Informal Internal Inspection Decision Review Form (PDF) and submit to the Permit Center at City Hall.
