Reducing & Reusing

Rethinking waste is about reexamining what materials should go to the landfill and what to do with things we no longer want or need or can no longer serve their original purpose, but could be used by someone else or reused in a new way. This page goes beyond the solid waste services provided by the City to provide ideas, inspiration, and information to divert resources from being buried in a landfill. Reducing waste will look different for everyone. Try one or two waste-reduction or recycling swaps at a time, see what fits your routine, location, budget, and lifestyle, and move forward from there!

Ways to Reduce

  • Unsubscribe from junk mail and email blasts and choose paperless billing.
  • Avoid single-use products and unnecessary packaging.
  • Invest in durable goods that will serve you for a long time.

Ways to Reuse

  • Repaint, reupholster, and refinish furniture to extend its use, or try a new style.
  • Create new things with items you already have or find a new purpose for old items.
